Michigan law requires both a Segment 1 and Segment 2 driver
education program for students under the age of eighteen. What
are the instructional time requirements for the Segment 1 and
Segment 2 programs?
The Segment 1 driver education program consists of 24 hours in
the classroom (twelve two-hour sessions), 6 hours of
behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction and 4 hours of observation
time. The Segment 2 program consists of 6 hours in the classroom
(three two-hour classroom sessions) focusing on defensive
driving/traffic safety. |
| 2. |
At
what age may students enroll in a Segment 1 driver education
program?
Students are permitted to enroll in a Segment 1 program at the
age of 14 years and 8 months. |

When is a student eligible to secure a Level 1 Learner’s
License?
The student will be eligible to secure a Level 1 Learner’s
License upon successful completion of a Segment 1 driver
education program and having reached the age of 14 years and 9
months. |
| 4. |
When may a student enroll in a Segment 2 driver education
program?
The student must have a Level l Learner’s License which has been
held for at least three months (90 days). The student must have
completed a minimum of 30 hours of driving (including 2

Are
parents required to provide additional on-the-street driving
experience?
After the Level 1 Learner’s License has been issued, a licensed
parent/legal guardian must drive with their son/daughter for a
minimum of 6 months (180 days). Within that six-month
period, a parent/legal guardian is expected to provide a
minimum of 50 hours of behind-the-wheel experience. Ten of
the fifty hours shall be night time driving. NOTE: When issued
the Level I Learner’s License at any Secretary of State branch
office, the student will receive a copy of the booklet, Road
Skills Test Study Guide. The guide gives a detailed
description of the road test--including a Student Driving
Experience Log (on the last pages) where the student should keep
a record of their driving experience. On the day of the road
test, the signature of a parent/legal guardian will be
required--documenting that the student has driven a minimum
of 50 hours (ten of which have been night time driving). |

Who
is required to take a road test?
All new driver license applicants are required to take a road
skills test. After a Level l License has been held for a
minimum of six months (180 days), the student becomes
eligible to take a road test. (The student must have a
Certificate of Completion from Segment 2 in order to be road
tested. There is no minimum holding period for the Certificate
of Completion from Segment 2.) To schedule a road skills test in
Michigan, a third party tester must be contacted. Independent
testing agencies are listed in the Yellow Pages under the
heading, “Driver License Road Testing--Certified.” All
Secretary of State branch offices provide a “courtesy” list of
Detroit Metro Third Party Testers. To assist you in your search
for a road tester, refer to “Scheduling A Road Skills Test” in
the Road Skills Test Study Guide. On the internet, use
www.michigan.gov/sos to access the list of approved Detroit
Metro Third Party Road Testers (listed by county). Lee
Driving School is not a third-party road tester; we do not give
road tests.
